"Why, you just use sour dough," Laura said.
Mrs. Boast had never made sour-dough biscuits! It was fun to show her. Laura measured out the cups of sour dough, put in the soda and salt and flour, and rolled out the biscuits on the board."

Welcome to week three of the "I Remember Laura" Blog-a-thon. This week we will be sharing family recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation. Laura told of the varied meals, special sweets, and holiday fare that Pa provided and Ma so lovingly prepared in all the locations where they lived. Almanzo even shared in good fresh farm food fare in Farmer Boy. Did your grandmother make the best fresh apple cake? Did your aunt make melt in your mouth molasses crinkle cookies? Mine did! Perhaps you will begin the tradition of handing down a current family favorite, share it! This week you can link up to share your family recipes and tell us a story of where and how they were served and why this particular recipe means so much to you. Anyone is welcome to join in and share your recipes and stories.
Laura was surprised at Mrs. Boast that Christmas morning. Biscuits were second only to bread in importance on the Ingalls table. The Ingalls were able to make these biscuits quickly because their sour dough was always warm and "working."
I was once given a starter similar to this, it was a base for "Friendship Bread." You had to feed it, divide it, and give some of it away. Well, at first we were enjoying this bread base and all the experimentation of adding other ingredients to make a variety of breads. I was very diligent in making sure my hungry little friend was fed and shared.
I gave it to friends, family, church family, husbands co-workers, all the teachers in my daughters school, casual acquaintances, my post man, paper delivery person, I even gave some people double helpings to pass along to their friends. This stuff grew and grew and grew! Soon every one at church was begging one another to take a bit of theirs, we had all run out of people to push this little dough onto.
Alas, I let my dough starter die! Yes I did, we were sick of bread, plain, cinnamon raisin, pumpkin, banana, even chocolate! So, if anyone ever asks you if you want a starter of "Friendship Bread", tell them no thanks! It doesn't make for very good friendship when they run in fear that you may be harboring a little baggie of starter in your purse when they see you approaching!
Remember to tune in on Wednesday for Prairie Posts to read the last installment of the interview with Laura Ingalls Gunn. The fourth and last week will be more of Laura's family history.
Art Swappers, two more weeks before your projects are due. Kimberly posted her tags here and I posted one set of tags and two quilt square projects here. If anyone else has posted theirs, let me know and I will leave a link to your post also. I can't wait to see your finished projects!

What a lovely quote you have chosen. I haven't tried the Friendship Bread.
LOL about the starter dough and your advice of just say no...my grandmother made some of the best meals that i know...sadly she never used a "recipe" and i never learned to make any of her specialties...
My post is up...looking forward to reading all the recipes and perhaps snagging a few more. I just had a nice recipe for friendship bread, but it made the entire house smell like yeast for ten days! :D
I never got into the starter dough for the same reason -- I just enjoy it when someone serves something from it. :-D
Thanks for stopping by to say hi! Your compliments are high praise to me, thank you very much, for YOU have the gift of writing. It was fun to try my hand! Have a great week - your "Laura" swap looks fun - wish I had time for it! I think I saw every single episode several times over - Vickie
What a lovely and interesting blog you have. Please stop by mine as I have something for you.
Years ago, a friend gave me some sourdough starter that had been in her family since the 1870s, and she said to freeze it if I got tired of using it. I did, and worked fine after thawing. I wonder if freezing works for starters in general??
Such a neat idea- we linked an older post for today by our mother and black-eyed peas fro New Years- we will have to do a new post for tomorrow- what fun!

I've just finished reading Pioneer Girl's post and wanted to leave a comment (last week, too) and haven't figured out how. Anyway, this is just to say that I have enjoyed reading her posts very much!!
My post is up. I cannot wait until this evening when I can read everyones post.
Ah yes, in my neck of the woods the starter was called "Amish Bread". It was delicious but after a month I just let it go.
Thank you for the smile.
I've posted my Recipe Card & will add more narrative later!
