I'D CHOOSE TO BE A DAISY...

I'd choose to be a daisy,
If I might be a flower;
Closing my petals softly
At twilight's quiet hour;
And waking in the morning,
When falls the early dew,
To welcome Heaven's bright sunshine,
And Heaven's bright tear-drops too.

-I'd Choose To Be A Daisy, Anonymous-
The daisy is my favorite flower. There is such a sweet simple innocence about it. It is considered to be the children's flower. It is also known as Baby's-pet or Brain-wort meaning child-flower. Children love to gather it for posies and for making daisy chains. Legend has it that if a little girl picks a bunch of daisies with her eyes shut, the number of flowers in the posy will be the number of years before she marries. Young girls with romantic notions have always told their fortunes by pulling the petals off to the refrain of, " He loves me, he loves me not" .

It is quite true to its name, for in the morning it opens with the light of day and when the sun goes down it folds up its white petals again as if it were going to sleep. Daisy means the day's eye, or the eye of the day. In Victorian times, a flower given had significant meaning. The meaning of the daisy is purity, innocence, loyal love, beauty, patience, and simplicity.

Spring was just beginning to open up and settle itself in around the farm... The pasture out back of the house was dotted with wild daisies... I missed him for a moment, wondering where he had gotten off too... A spring shower was on its way, I could here it pattering up through the hollow... The sun was still shining as tiny diamond drips began to drop from the sky... He skidded up onto the porch as the first patters hit, he'd been out searching... For the perfect single daisy... To present to me... In that moment, its meaning was pretty significant to me. It signified our patience with one another in all the years we have been together and our loyal love, even through the hard times when it wasn't so easy to be loyal or to love, it was a symbol of simplistic beauty of love given freely. And, I accepted it without hesitation.

Monday marks the official anniversary of our 30th year of marriage. Handy Hubby and I are off to a little weekend getaway. We had high hopes of a special trip to celebrate the occasion but with the whole job change he lost all his vacation time so we are settling for a quite weekend. I found a little honeymoon cabin on the river about an hour from here so we won't have to spend a lot of our precious little time traveling.

He is beyond excited because fishing will be involved. I am not exactly a fishing kind of girl. He loves it, I do not. It is the daisy principal at work. Its actually more than that, it is the marriage principal at work. I know that he has been under a lot of stress and he needs to relax and fishing is his thing so I hand over my desire for foo-foo romance to meet his need. Just like the day he handed me the daisy, he was meeting my need. I was a little upset that day and in a quieter mood. He sensed that I was still struggling with the loss of my grandmother so he took action with a physical gesture to let me know that I was loved and he was there in any way I needed him to be. If I were to pluck the petals of a daisy today, I'd say he loves me...and I am greatly blessed.

Together we have welcomed heavens bright sunshine and had our share of bright tear drops too. If I were to choose all over again, I'd be his daisy, even in the turbulent " loves me, loves me not" times, closing each day and waking each morning with him at my side.

I hope that each of you have a beauty filled weekend surrounded by those you love.

  3. Hi Miss Sandy,
    Happy Anniversary to you both. That's what is so nice as you get older too, you appreciate the simpler things. And just being together.
    My favorite flower is the pansy. Because it is usually here year around. And in the dreary winters it is very uplifting.
    Enjoy your weekend!

  10. Sandy,

    Didn't women and men use to dress beautifully? They were always so smartly turned out looked so...feminine and masculine. I just love it. I especially love to see people dressed like the 40's and 30's. Oh, I long for fashions like those to come back in style and for people to care about their appearance more...

    i love daisies, too. They are happy, friendly flowers and they last long when cut and put in a vase.

    Have a great one!
